A little magic brightened the day of software developers, engineers and execs at the Systems and Software Technology (SSTC) Conference in Salt Lake City this week.
BNS, LLC hired us (ABCI) to organize their appearance at the trade show. We hired Diamond Jim Davis of Outlaw Entertainment to provide a little magic and help explain the need for Information Assurance and DIACAP Certification (which is required of all software systems that interact with the Federal Government.)
“How many times have you loaded a software program and found out it wasn’t what you expected?” Asked Diamond Jim of a conference-goer, as he dealt him a hand of cards. “Um, sometimes it happens,” said the laughing visitor as he turned the cards over and found they were, indeed, not what he had been expecting.
“This is the most fun I’ve had all day.” said another visitor, after guessing (incorrectly) the location of a card he’d seen put down. “Nope, and not only is your data missing,” said Diamond Jim, “but you don’t know whose hand it’s gotten into!” Diamond Jim pulled cards out of his hat, his pockets, and his conference ID badge holder after “disappearing” them from the hands of guests.
People lined up to have a turn with the magician, and to receive a their own deck of playing cards, customized with the BNS logo and the slogan “Don’t Gamble with Information Assurance.”
Many thanks to:
- Angie Griffeth at the SSTC Conference for organizing a fabulous event
- Joyce Parkinson of Fusion Imaging for smoothly handling the booth design work
- Charles, Steve and Andy at Customized Playing Cards for beautiful, high quality playing cards
- Diamond Jim Davis for thinking fast on his feet in a roomful of actual rocket scientists for two days
and of course, our intrepid clients,
- William Muse and Steven Seamons of BNS, LLC.

[…] The Magician, The Magus, or The Juggler (I) is the first trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional Tarot decks. It is used in game playing as well as in divination. In divination it is considered by some to succeed the The Fool card, often numbered 0. IconographyIn French, the Magician is called Le Bateleur, “the mountebank” or the “sleight of hand artist”, a practitioner of stage magic. The Italian tradition calls him Il Bagatto or Il Bagatello, which has similar connotations to the French term according to old dictionaries.. The Mantegna Tarocchi image that would seem to correspond with the Magician is labeled Artixano, the Artisan; he is the second lowest in the series, outranking only the Beggar. Visually the 18th-century woodcuts reflect earlier iconic representations, and can be compared to the free artistic renditions in the 15th-century hand-painted tarots made for the Visconti and Sforza families. In the painting of cards assigned to Bonifacio Bembo, the magician seems to play with cups and balls. In esoteric decks, occultists, starting with Oswald Wirth, The Magician turned from a mountebank in magus. They took the curves wizard hat into the edge of the image of Marseilles mathematical sign for infinity, add more function symbols of changing tastes. The key is that the magician has set up a temporary table in the open air, to display items that represent the colors of the Minor Arcana: Cups, Coins, Swords (knives). The fourth, the stick (Clubs) he holds in his hand. The stick is for later, a literal interpretation Wizard "magic wand". The illustration of the Tarot card "The Magician" in the Rider-Waite tarot deck was developed by AE Waite of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1910. Waite was a key figure in the development of the modern interpretation of Tarot, but not all interpretations follow his theology. In the tarot gameIn Games Tarocchi Tarot and french, The Magician is the advantage of the lowest ranking. He is one of the episodes, or "end" in the game of Tarot, to take a trick with these cards has a score of importance.
