Mastermind groups have been around forever, and have been popular since the days of Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie.
Who wouldn’t love to have a the devoted attention of a group of smart people you trust to solve your toughest questions and give you leads, contacts and insights on how to make your business more successful?
Hill defines it a “mastermind group” as
Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose. . . This form of cooperative alliance has been the basis of nearly every great fortune.
I’ve had the pleasure of being part of several groups that could be called “masterminds,” including
- Groups of entrepreneurs in a neighborhood that assist one another with business ideas, pool resources, and refer business wherever appropriate.
- Joint ventures for marketing purposes – list and technique-sharing alliances.
- Amazingly effective project groups united to accomplish a specific task.
- A small group of marketing professionals from different industries that agree to review each member’s work and offer ideas for improvement.
- Formal mastermind groups where each member works each individual member’s goals and objectives by providing advice, assistance and contacts.
In the best mastermind groups, I’ve found that people may come from diverse backgrounds and businesses but have an equal level of motivation, and commitment to the group. A good facilitator is also key, because they can set the tone for the whole enterprise, select the best working groups, direct conversation in constructive ways and solve problems that come up.
Mastermind groups can lead a professional or entrepreneur into whole new levels of success.
I’ve been asked if I’d be interested in starting or facilitating a mastermind group of aviation professionals. Before committing to the idea, let me start by asking you, our readers –
- Would you be interested in joining a mastermind group?
- What would the ideal mastermind group look like? How many members? What kind of people?
- Would meetings be virtual, in-person or both?
- What should be expected of group members?
